Each spring, in observance of National Poetry Month, the University of Texas at Tyler Robert R. Muntz Library in conjunction with the Rusk County Poetry Society and the Rose Garden Poetry Society, both local chapters of the Poetry Society of Texas, presents an outstanding Texas poet as part of the UT Tyler Student Poet Awards Ceremony. Past honorees have included Texas Poet Laureates Cleatus Rattan, Alan Birkelbach, Larry D. Thomas, Karla K. Morton and former PST/NFSPS President Budd Powell Mahan

Past awards' honored guest was 2010 Texas Poet Laureate Karla K. Morton of Denton. Among many other awards and designations, Ms. Morton has published three collections of poetry and is a member of the Poetry Society of Texas. After a book-signing and reception, Ms. Morton will tell her inspiring story, read some of her poetry and answer audience questions on poetry and writing, before announcing the winners of the University of Texas Robert R. Muntz Student Poet Contest.
